What is Farm Fun Chickens?

In this lesson, we’ll learn all about our little feathery farm friends: chickens! This is a fun way to learn about animal life cycles from egg to chicken. We’ll talk about how mama hens care for their eggs, how baby chickens develop inside the egg and hatch, all of the food and nutrients that a baby chick needs to grow into a big fluffy chicken, and of course all of the wonderful things that we get from chickens. We’ll even get to pet a live chicken - yup, that’s right. A real chicken right in your classroom! The presentation covers:

  • What We Get From Chickens (Eggs, Fertilizer, Meat)

  • What to Poultry Farmers Do? (care for the chickens, keeping them healthy, safe from predators)

  • General Biology (what they eat, roosters vs. hens, egg production, change through the seasons)

  • Overview of hatching eggs (how the embryo develops, what happens on hatch day)

How does this fit in with our learning goals?

All of our lessons are connected to grade-level learning milestones (including Common Core and NGSS modules) and are an excellent way to bring learning to life while helping students solidify concepts like: Seasons, How Parents Help Offspring, Needs of Living Things, Inheritance of Traits, Animal Body Parts.

What age range is the presentation for?

Farm Fun Chickens is designed for kindergarten through 3rd graders, parents and teachers usually love it too. The content is easily adjustable to achieve the learning goals of your classroom.

What about class size?

This presentation works really well for up to 25 students so the class can stay hands-on and personal. I can accommodate larger groups if that works best for your classroom.

How long does it last?

The time is adjustable between 30 and 60 minutes to best fit your schedule.

What about hatching eggs?

Interested in an additional fun activity? Sager Family Farm can provide an egg hatching kit which will include absolutely everything that you need to hatch cute fuzzy baby chicks. After your chicks hatch and you’ve enjoyed their company for up to a week, just return all of the equipment, and the little chickies will be placed in loving homes. The whole project usually takes 21 to 28 days to complete. Contact us to learn more, we only do a small number of these projects each year.
